From April 4th to June 4th The Ripple Effect ran a campaign on the excellent online music website ReverbNation (www.reverbnation.com). This campaign allowed any artist or band registered with ReverbNation to submit their music to The Ripple Effect for possible review on the site and airplay on The Ripple Effect radio shows. When all was said and done we had received 4,799 submissions! Incredible! The purpose of this column is to highlight those artists and bands whose musical submissions I accepted as being worthy of consideration. While these are not reviews per se, I’m going to provide a brief rundown of what to expect from each artist/band, a sample when available, and a link to check out more on their corresponding ReverbNation page.
Voice Of Addiction – From Chicago, IL comes this three man unit bursting forth with more punk energy than a fission reactor! They utilize old-school punk instrumentation on speed and then throw modern punk vocals on top to complete their dominating sound. If you’re a punk rock fan looking for something new to chew on take a listen to this band. Similar artists include The Clash, Bad Religion, and Against Me!.

Song Sample – “Wrecking Ball (Clip)
Doll – Hey, do you miss the sound of hard rock/grunge from the 1990’s? If so this Ottawa, Canada quartet is aimed directly at your heart! In my opinion, this band takes what those 90’s bands did and adds multiple layers of piss and vinegar to the mix. All three songs I listened to absolutely rock! Ultra powerful instrumentation and undeniably electric vocals. Wow! Similar artists include L7, Distillers, and Hole.

Song Sample – “FMO”
Bitter Herbs – This sounds pretty bizarre in my opinion for something listed as singer/songwriter. The second tag, garage folk, explains this Huntington Woods, MI band’s sound more accurately. Their song submission has this wonderful, old-timey parlor feel complete with twinkly piano. The vocals sound to my ears like a mix of Bob Dylan and a low register Harry Nilsson. Similar artists include the aforementioned Dylan, Lou Reed, and Elvis Costello. Check them out waveriders.

Song Sample – “Late o’ Clock (The Viral Edition)”
Dozens – Now this song submission really snuck up on me. It begins so quietly I questioned whether it had even begun, and suddenly the song blossomed into a wonderful example of indie synth-driven pop rock! This trio from Chicago, IL lists MGMT, Cut Copy, and Hall & Oates as similar artists. Frankly, I was pretty perturbed that there was only one song to sample. I’d definitely like to hear more!

The Yesberger Band – If you like your pop music to be performed by jazz musicians than you really need to listen to this trio of young men from Boston, MA. They have that whole ‘upbeat pop sung by a crooner’ style down to a science. In fact, the two songs I listened to are almost too catchy for their own good! Similar artists include Jamie Cullum and Ben Folds. Follow the link and get happy.

SharBaby – Waveriders I know that you all love some blues. Good, old fashioned, authentic blues. Well let me introduce you to this quality purveyor of said music. This talented lady from Birmingham, AL has been playing her guitar and singing now for 44 years. Every song I listened to (and she has quite a few to sample believe me) sounded fantastic! Similar artists include Tina Turner, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Fats Domino. You know what to do folks.

It Came From ReverbNation #12: Featuring Wooster, Pete Special, Maquina Mono (The Monkey Machine), Red Emery, Junior Toots, and Squeaker
From April 4th to June 4th The Ripple Effect ran a campaign on the excellent online music website ReverbNation (www.reverbnation.com). This campaign allowed any artist or band registered with ReverbNation to submit their music to The Ripple Effect for possible review on the site and airplay on The Ripple Effect radio shows. The purpose of this column is to highlight those artists and bands whose musical submissions I accepted as being worthy of consideration. While these are not reviews per se, I’m going to provide a brief rundown of what to expect from each artist/band, a sample when available, and a link to check out more on their corresponding ReverbNation page.
Wooster – All right, all right. This five piece band from Santa Cruz, CA caught my ear thanks to their slow simmering song submission. The vocals are heavily influenced by reggae, and they sound perfect against this musical backdrop. Another song I listened to is quite a bit faster and reminds me of a track by Maroon 5. Similar artists include The Black Keys, Foster The People, and Mason Jennings. If you’re looking for something mixing rock, reggae, funk, and blues this is your band.

Song Sample – Live In Sebastopol
Pete Special – Okay waveriders. When I read that someone played with Levon Helm and “The Band” you have my attention. This gentleman and his two musical cohorts out of Chicago, IL play some mean blues with prominent strains of classic R&B and Southern soul. The first comparisons that jumped to mind vocally were Dr. John and Michael McDonald. Very impressive!

Song Sample – “Mississippi”
Maquina Mono (The Monkey Machine) – Blasting out of New York, NY comes this seven member Latin rock group. Their song submission is bursting with signature Latin rhythms, an active horn section, and exceedingly catchy vocals sung in Spanish. “Music to listen to & dance all night” they say in their bio. I couldn’t agree more. Similar artists include Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Mana.

Song Sample – “Dejame”
Red Emery – Question. Who’s in the mood for a dirty, sleazy, down-tempo Portishead/Garbage sounding song? Me too! I listened to the incredibly refreshing submission sent in by this five member band out of Montreal, Canada multiple times. Ultra groovy music, and the female vocals are downright sinful. If you have any liking for trip hop and groups like Massive Attack this band is for you.

Junior Toots – I’ve said it before waveriders. Reggae is not a genre of music I can be considered knowledgeable about. I do know what I like however. Junior Toots, the son of Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals, fronts this five piece band out of Berkeley, CA that takes the sonic blueprint of reggae and adds some ska, roots rock, and dancehall elements to the mix. It sounds fantastic! Hear for yourselves!

Song Sample – “Puss & Dog”
Squeaker – Man, if this is what all pop rock sounds like in Adelaide, Australia then I need to hear more! Considering what I’m used to this song submission would fall squarely into the heavy alternative rock category. This female vocalist sounds superb, and I really like the electronic/industrial elements throughout the song. Reminds me of Nine Inch Nails. Along with NIN other similar artists listed on their bio page are Garbage, Pat Benetar, and Evanescence. Click on the link waveriders.

The Relative Strangers – Waltzing out of Orange County, CA comes this four member alternative rock band whose song submission sounds like a more modern/indie take on a song by The Pixies. They namedrop The Killers, Muse, The Dear Hunter, and The Cure as similar artists. If any of those artists excites you I strongly suggest checking these guys out.

Song Sample – “What’s The Weapon Of Choice?”
New Pilot – Wait a second! That simply wasn’t fair. This five piece band from outside Boston, MA begins their song with a full on alt rock soundscape. Then, thirty seconds in, the song completely transitions into a compelling roots rock anthem! Yep, that was pretty darn groovy. Dr. Dog, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket are listed as similar artists. Have a listen.

Song Sample – “Stuttering”
Good Sir Con Artist– This Dayton, OH quartet reminds me of one of my current favorite bands, Murdocks. The song they submitted has this old school, wholesome feel to it that is repeatedly thrown into disarray with huge distorted choruses. Really cool stuff in my opinion. Interestingly they list The Fray, Third Eye Blind, and The Format as similar artists. I say interesting because I disagree. What’s your verdict?

Song Sample – “Darla”
Odoghan – Do you know any bands from Cordoba, Argentina? Well now you do! This four man unit sent in a rollicking punk and roll tune that really got my blood pumping. Great dual guitar work, and in your face melodic vocals. Lovely! Their other songs deviate almost 180 degrees from this style. Since they compare themselves to the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and Coldplay I suppose that makes sense. Which song do you like the most?

Ned Evett – Hear me out waveriders. I listened to the song submitted by this gentleman from Nashville, TN one time and thought it was extremely pleasant Americana. Then I read about how he plays a fretless guitar. My second run through became much more impressive while still remaining extremely pleasant. Then I listened to another track which turned out to be a wicked barn-burner. For crying out loud, his latest album was worked on and produced by Adrian Belew! Need I say more?

Carlos Rock Experience – Please excuse me for believing that this five piece band from La Jolla, CA would provide a Santana-like experience. That is far from accurate. While this band retains a classic rock sound they make it clear that their influences are the Faces, 1970’s era Rolling Stones, and early Fleetwood Mac. And let me tell you folks, that’s what they sound like. Their song has a pretty gnarly main guitar line, and the female vocalist provides plenty of attitude. I like it.

Prezident Brown – Hey waveriders. Do you know a genre of music that I have incredibly little working knowledge about? That’s right, reggae! I can tell you however that I find the song submitted by this Jamaican artist and his three musical cohorts to be quite good. It sounds earthy and hypnotic and I think the vocals really accentuate the whole affair. Check it out.

A Ton Of Blues – Apparently I need to visit Worchester, MA because this is one heck of a mean blues quartet. They use the template set down by classic artists like Buddy Guy and The Fabulous Thunderbirds and drench it in attitude. Just a flat out dirty, glorious sound these guys produce. I dare you to listen and tell me I’m wrong.

iNFiNiEN – Now this submission was something totally different! This four member outfit (with guest musicians) bills themselves as rock/psychedelic/experimental. The tune I listened to was a very trippy Indian flavored affair that underwent a pretty serious musical shift around the 2:30 mark to become more atmospherically heavy. I totally dug it! Plus, name me another band that counts Bjork, Radiohead, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Tool as similar artists. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Kathryn Caine – You know, I’m always surprised by how much I like listening to well-done bluegrass music. This lady out of Charlottesville, NC is just what the doctor ordered if you need a shot of the good stuff! Her song submission was fantastic. A couple of her other songs I listened to were great too showing that she casts a wide musical net incorporating a more traditional country sound, some southern rock, and even a hint of soul. Recommended.

Hanna Barakat – Two things stood out to my ears while listening to the song submitted by this young lady from Beirut, Lebanon. First of all I really dig the whole Middle Eastern hard rock/metal sound the song has going for it. Second and more importantly this artist has supreme control over her voice, and she uses that control to great effect. If you like Amy Lee’s voice you’ll really dig this powerful vocalist.

Jolly – You know, the four men in this picture sure look focused and intense for a band named Jolly. Want to know something else? If you like your rock progressive you should really check out this Howard Beach, NY quartet. They name drop Porcupine Tree, Karnivool, and Faith No More as similar artists. That sounds right to me. Also they scientifically engineered their music to elevate your self-awareness. Seriously, I’m not kidding. Hear for yourselves.

Evans Blue – This is an alternative rock band from Saint Louis, Missouri. The song they submitted caught my ear based on the strong production. Also the vocals were often sung in a manner that mimicked reggae artists in regards to how the words flowed into each other. If you like listening to ‘cutting edge’ rock music radio stations I suggest checking these guys out.

Aboi Doyle – This gentleman is from London. His music is a combination of pop and R&B that relies on synthetic beats to propel the music forward. I found his voice to be very ear pleasing and would recommend anybody into electro pop check him out.

SPECYPHI – Coming at you from Cincinnati, Ohio is this four piece hard rock band. Their sound in my opinion can best be described as post-grunge, modern hard rock with a heaping helping of Pantera thrown in for good measure. Their music sports a meaty guitar tone, and a suitably in your face bass presence. Those looking for a pummeling might dig this.

Marina V – A pop singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, California. I found her voice to be rather striking. Quite flexible too based on the fact that it jumped from sounding elegant and full to somewhat childlike several times throughout the song. The song she submitted had an electronic drumbeat, but a couple of others featured all organic instrumentation. Worth a look I’d say.

The Last Good Year – I love the opening line to their bio. “Four guys, no gimmicks, just rock.” Rockin’ is what it’s all about right? Hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana this band does just that. They rock! And they do so in a manner heavily influenced by the classic rock bands of the 1970s. TLGY currently has a song entitled “Steady Road” featured on ESPN. It’s being released on Itunes July 31st. Check it out.
